Four Tips To Deodorize Your Carpet
If you have carpet in your home it’s likely because it gives a warm and inviting feeling. Curling up on the carpet with a bunch of blankets and pillows during movie night is what your kids (and animals) live for! All of this is lost if there are weird smells on the carpet, suddenly everything feels dirty and gross.
There are a few tips to try when it comes to deodorize your carpet, so try a few of these for preventative maintenance or in-between our scheduled carpet cleaning services.
Before you begin any of these tips, be sure to vacuum the carpet you’ll be deodorizing to remove any lingering dirt and debris.
- Baking soda – Baking soda is the wonder substance for many things, and it’s great for carpets as well. Begin by sprinkling the baking soda over the carpet and letting it sit for at least two hours. Vacuum the baking soda and your carpets will smell fresh once again.
DIY hack: Add an essential oil such as orange or lavender to the baking soda mixture to give your carpets an extra pleasant scent.
- Vinegar – Vinegar comes with a very potent smell that people tend to steer clear of, but once the liquid completely dries, it’s odorless. Tackle extreme carpet odors with vinegar (white vinegar is highly recommended) by pouring some into a spray bottle and spraying the substance evenly over the carpet. Let the vinegar dry thoroughly, and repeat if necessary.
- Vodka – Take a lower tier vodka (don’t use the good stuff) and put it in a spray bottle and use it for spot odors. If there is a pet stain you need to quickly deodorize or other stubborn smells, spray the vodka on the site and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Next, absorb the excess vodka, sprinkle some baking soda, and finish by vacuuming. Vodka is wonderful for really foul smelling spots and is great for killing bacteria — keeping your home fresh and your family healthy.
- Lemon water – Lemon water is not only a delicious spa water, use it for carpet deodorizing as well! Take one lemon and squeeze the juice into a spray bottle and dilute the rest with water. Spray an entire area or use it for spot deodorizing, let it dry, and repeat if necessary.
Sometimes your lifestyle doesn’t always host the freshest of smells between your animals and teenagers, so if your home smells a little musty or there is a lingering smell that just won’t go away, try using baking soda, vinegar, or vodka to remedy it. Get back to a pleasant smelling carpet that everyone can enjoy laying on without being grossed out!
